| The main focus of the patent is the form of the adjusting screw and its attachment to the supporting ferule and shank. The specifications note two alternate modes of connecting the screw shaft and head of the adjusting screw. The patent drawing shows them riveted together; the specifications note they can also be "forced" together.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" identifies the Brown Specialty Mfg. Co. of Etna, PA as one manufacturer.
The Cleveland Screw Wrench Co. example shown in the 2nd image has the the screw and nut "forced" together, and the wrench shank extends through the wood handle to terminate in a screwed on nut.
Campfield's August 12, 1884 patent (no. 303,385) describes another method for constructing the adjusting screw which might be the method employed for the Cleveland Screw Wrench Company adjusting screws. Campfield is listed as President of the Cleveland Screw Wrench Company in the Cleveland City Directory published in August, 1884. |
