Description: |
| The nut and pipe jaws are adjusted by a left- and right-handed screw. The jaw shapes match the patent drawing. The jaws on the side with the adjusting screw have a pair of long notches to hold a drill bit tang as well as the transverse notches to grip pipe. The adjusting screw has holes for a nail or pin punch for extra leverage. These jaws are mounted inside a ratchet head. A thumb-screw activated toggle disengages one or the other of a pair of pawls to reverse the direction of the ratchet action.
A known example is marked OWEN; another example appeared as a "what's-it" on pg. 45 of the Dec. 2009 MWTCA Gristmill.
