The grip is three arcs of a circle. One end is clipped to the handle by a pin and spring (one known example has a pivoted clip to retain the girth rather than a flat spring) -- the other end is caught by a cam on the handle to tighten the grip as the handle is swung.

Parmelee's August 1907 obituary notes he put the wrench into production at Philadelphia (he was 69 years old when he received the patent); an 1898 textbook mentions an agent in Scranton, PA.

Subsequent improvements and refinements were covered by patent nos. 590,853, 648,706, and 871,436.

S. Lloyd Wiegand's June 6, 1899 patent 626,401 is based on the same primary concept.
