| The Fulton Patent gage is the first really original butt gage design since the Marden Patent(125,823), and, like Marden's, was widely copied over the years. As a matter of fact, the basic idea behind this tool was "borrowed" a few years later by the most popular butt gage of all time—the Stanley #95.
The Fulton's Patent gage uses a simple trick to leave the require gain in the hinge mortise. It has two identical blocks that slide across each other, each carrying a point. The trick is that one point is bevelled to the inside, while the other is bevelled to the outside. This means that the relative distance between the two points will differ by the thickness of the point. |
