Description:
A pivoted spring-jaw forms a pipe gripping jaw for a second jaw to complement the square nut jaws.

A known example is marked, "JAS. McLAREN PATd NOV. 20 1866 ALBANY NY." Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" notes an 1872 "Scientific American" ad in which McLaren is offering the patent on a royalty basis. An 1877 hardware wholesaler's catalog listing for "EUREKA COMBINATION WRENCH" shows this design. Late 1880s ads for the Rouse combination nut and pipe wrench note this patent as the basis for the combination nut and pipe movable jaw.

Some examples of the Bemis & Call combination pipe & nut wrench also include date marks citing this patent and its reissue. (see 3rd photo in DATAMP entry for patent 145,085)
