MERRICK IMPROVED WRENCH in July 21, 1849 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN
Description:
The wrench has a "hook" shaped fixed jaw, and a toothed "lever" portion on the adjustable jaw. Merrick describes this as an improvement on his Aug. 15, 1848 patent 5,707. The hook jaw portion of this pipe wrench design was used by Bemis & Call for pipe wrenches until just before WWII. Wrenches citing this patent and matching this design are shown in period B&C advertising; few of the wrenches have survived.

This patent noted in patent nos. 15,184 & 18,135.
