Description:
Adjustment is accomplished by sliding a connecting pin that fits in the intersection of differently angled slots in the main shank and movable jaw.

From the specifications -- "The theory of the operation is as follows: When force is applied at J, it is communicated from the lower side of the slot D through P to the upper side of the slot C. At P this force is resolved into two forces, one of which tends to cause P to move down in slot C, and the other tends to cause it to move up in slot D. The slots C and D are placed at such an angle to each other that these forces balance each other at P. Therefore P cannot be moved by any force applied at J."

Compare this to Wm. Cronk's Oct. 22, 1912 patent no. 1,041,967.
