This gage is designed to mark both the lock and hinge mortises for a door. In operation it is very much like the Biersdorf patent (1,142,138), but it is packaged in a much thinner tool reminiscent of the Goodell patent (531,114) that was in wide use at this time.

The new feature on this gage, however, is the ability to adjust the gain for both the hinge and lock markers with a recessed thumbwheel in the body of the tool. A very cool feature, but probably not that useful in the real world. Once you got the gain set the way you liked, you would never adjust it again.
