Description:
This patent comprised six improvements. "First, for a method of constructing the air-pump; secondly, for a method of packing stuffing-boxes... The third and fourth methods relate to the construction and motion of the valves. The fifth was a method of connecting the piston-rod to the parallel motion; and the last, for the construction of fireplaces, by which the smoke arising from the fire was to be consumed." Rival engine maker Boulton & Watt challenged the patent and showed the existence of prior art for one of the claims. Under the patent laws then in place, the entire patent was then set aside.
