Description:
The patent is for a knurled-nut adjustable open end wrench. The specifications differentiate the adjusting mechanism from those used in E. J. Worcester's June 9, 1857 patent (no. 17,531), and W.C. Noyes' May 31, 1864 patent (no. 42,961). The "S" handle shown in the drawings is the first appearance of the feature in U.S. wrench patents, but is not mentioned in the specifications.

A known example is marked "PAT APL 27 69" on the movable jaw, and "MECHANIC'S WRENCH PROVIDENCE R.I."
