Description: |
The tongs somewhat resembles a pliers; the movable fulcrum point is on a spring-loaded pawl that engages a rack on the fixed shank. Pictured as no. 742 In "Antique and Unusual Wrenches," by Schulzes.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" assumes Spery produced them. The Spery Pipe-Tong and Tool Co. of Hermann, MO appears in a list published by the Missouri Secretary of State's office in 1893.
Spery's December 29, 1891 pipe-tongs patent (no. 466,195), incorporates a pawl as a movable pivot for a self-adjusting hook jaw pipe wrench. |
