Description:
The invention is an oscillating spindle sander that was sold as the Syracuse S-1 and, once Porter-Cable bought them out in 1922, the Porter-Cable S-1. Essentially the same mechanism was used in the benchtop versions, O-2, O-3, and O-4.

This patent is of additional interest because inventor Ray Carter developed the first successful general-purpose router; see patent 1,433,497.
