Description:
The innovation is a new "bearing metal" composition, in hard and soft variants. The hard variant contains 19 lbs copper, 17.5 lbs zinc, 1.5 lbs lead, and 2 oz of tin. The soft variant contains 11.5 lbs copper, 10 lbs zinc, 15 oz lead, and 1 oz tin. "This composition differs from all others used for similar purposes in the large proportion of zinc to the copper, tin, and lead, and also in the method of mixing them, the copper must be first melted then the lead and tin, and lastly the zinc with the addition of a little borax. The advantages claimed for this composition are that it can be made cheaper than the common composition of copper and tin, while at the same time it is more durable, will wear longer, is closer in texture, can be made hard, and at the same time is not brittle; but can be bent or hammered without breaking."
