This pliers-type tool with large gripping teeth was designed and patented as a pipe wrench. It was produced and marketed as a horseshoe calk wrench by the Neverslip Horseshoe Company of Boston. Markings on known examples are "PAT JULY 6, 75 .. IN / OUT"

Pat. #s 588,438, 796,305, 1,061,047, and 1,254,813 are later efforts to address the problems inherent in manipulating horseshoe calks.
