Description:
This patent was improved in the inventor's subsequent patent 179,585. See also his first patent, 129,843.

The inventor was born in Canada to fugitive slaves from Kentucky. He studied in Scotland and was certified as a mechanical engineer, then rejoined his family who in the meantime had moved to Ypsilanti. Unable to find work worthy of his skills, he worked in his home machine shop, ultimately obtaining 57 US patents, most of them related to steam-engine lubricators.
