In the context of engine designs such as that in patent no. 1,604,412, a shield for valve spring compressors of the type in patent no. 1,461,275 (the specification cite a specific patent application from Jan. 11, 1929) which would catch "keys" attaching valve stems and valve springs.

The device is also shown in a context drawing in patent no. 1,917,183.
