The tool consists of a handle, hand guard, leather strap, and clasp. It is a strap-type holder/wrench.

The patent is the oldest "jar wrench" in the CCL 81/3.43 (strap type that encircle a work piece). The patent is noted in James H. Christie's April 17, 1888 jar wrench patent (no. 381,213).
