Description:
The inventor was 72 years old at the time this patent was issued. He was an iron funder and engine builder. He was co-owner of the Calcutt Ironworks in Manchester.

From the 1836 book "A Popular and Descriptive Account of the Steam Engine", by Charles F. Partington: "The cast-iron boiler invented by Mr. Brodie, may be constructed of any dimensions, and the iron plates of which it is composed are made with flanches of the required size, and put together with rivets and screws. To prevent the boiler giving way by the force of vapour within, it is strengthened by wrought-iron stays, and the vessel thus made is supported by iron legs, so that the fire is allowed to communicate with the whole of its lower area without being connected with the brick work with which it is usually surrounded."
