This is the British equivalent of US patent 8,162. John Gedge was the British patentee who was really just an agent for the inventor, Ransom Cook. This style of auger bit is known as a Cook's patent bit in the US and as a Gedge's patent (or Gedge's pattern) bits in the UK.
