"Vintage Machinery" entry for Bay State Iron Works
Description:
William Edward Newton was with the Office of Patents and is the one who applied for the patent based on "a communication to him from abroad" by the other (and actual) listed inventors. Charles Harrison Lovrien's surname is spelled as "Lovrein" in the patent documents; he spelled his name that way until the 1870s but we have used the Lovrien spelling for consistency with his 1879-1881 US patents. In 1865 Lovrien established the Bay State Iron Works in Erie, Pa, the place and time of the first oil boom. Soon after, Leonard H. Hall became a partner in the business, and then in about 1868 Orange Noble replaced Lovrien. Hall & Noble operated the Bay State Iron Works for many years.
