The patent is for a stamped steel three - or four- blade screwdriver small enough to slip in a pocket, with a central wrench opening that also serves as a grip.

Budd received 10 patents on May 1, 1877 -- the others were for gun cleaning equipment, a shotgun cartridge, a moisture sealant comprised of parafin and vaseline, and a wire wheel brush (Pat Nos. 190,120 through 190,126, 190,189 and 190,190). He was a member of the Connecticut legislature in 1872.
