Description:
Abstract:

Relates to rotary distribution valves adapted for reversing. Fig. 5 shows the application to an engine with several single-acting cylinders. The valve a is in the form of a hollow cylinder, with ports and cavities or embayments adapted to revolve in a bored cylindrical chest or casing b. The valve is made with two similar sets of ports, one for forward running of the engine and one for backward running. In the example shown, one set comprises the steam-admission ports 22, 23, 24, 25 and the exhaust cavities 26, 27. The valve is rotated by toothed gearing so arranged that it can also be moved endwise by a lever 19, so as to bring the other set of ports into action, when required. Fig. 4 shows the application of the invention to a steering-engine. The valve in the casing b is revolved through the spindle d by skew gearing from the crank shaft v. By the lever w, the spindle d can be slid endwise through the skew-wheel 3, so as to start the engine in either direction. The lever w simultaneously controls the steam supply by operating a valve in the box 10. The ports in the valve-chest are disposed at or near the bottom, so that contact when the valve becomes worn shall be ensured by the weight of the valve.
