"Vintage Machinery" entry for George Richards & Co., Ltd.
Description:
"The central shaft G' geared to the adjusting-screw of the rotary tool head of a boring and facing machine is driven from a pinion G2 geared to the hollow spindle through change-speed gear 1, 2, 3 and splined to a sleeve loose on the shaft G1 but connected to it by sun-and-planet gearing K. The planet-wheel carrier K3 is normally locked by a detent but is also geared to a wheel for hand adjustment while running. The arrangement has the advantage that the adjustments are made by means of a stationary instead of a constantly running hand-wheel as usual. Additional gear 7 is provided such that when in driving relation the shaft G1 rotates at the same speed as the spindle. The pinion G2 can be slid into locking engagement with the carrier K3, by a further movement of the lever which releases the detent, to give a rapid adjustment, the rotation of the spindle being preferably stopped. Other forms of differential gear may be employed."
