Description: |
| The patent is for the spur on one handle and corresponding socket on the other which insure the nipper jaws operate correctly, and the "lip" the spring between the jaws bears against. It is an improvement to the Thomas G. Hall cutting nippers (patent no. 209,677). The concepts were incorporated into the Hall nippers.
The patent was contested by Hall; a series of suits and countersuits ensued with final determination by the U.S. Supreme Court that Johnson was not the "first inventor" of the improvements claimed. [Thompson v. Hall, 130 U.S. 117 (1889)]. Johnson was employed by Interchangeable Tool Company at the time the concepts in the patent were developed. |
