Description:
The patent adds a simple screw-adjust pivot to the idea of a rotatable cubical jaw bit patented by Lovrien and Henry Banister on March 18, 1879 (pat. no. 213,376). (See that entry for note of subsequent Board of Commissioner of Patents decision removing Banister as co-patentee).

This patent was used in one version of the ACME CUBE PIPE TONGS produced at the BAY STATE IRON WORKS operated by Noble, Hall and Co. of Erie, PA. One known example with a different retaining means for the hard cube "tooth" is marked "HOLLANDS MFG. CO. ERIE PA." and does not include "ACME PIPE TONGS" or the 1880 patent date.

Lovrien's Canadian patent CA-11709 granted Sept. 3, 1880 claims all the features of the ACME CUBE PIPE TONGS, and provides his full name.

Another example of the ACME PIPE TONGS is marked with patent date Aug. 6, 1872. That patent is William Campbell's patent no. 130,278.
