| This improvement to Worden's April 21, 1881 pipe tongs patent (no. 240,067) provides a better means of holding the "bite-block" in the lower jaw. The "bite-block" is longer than the width of the jaw to provide a broader bearing surface less likely to crush pipe.
The illustration of "Worden's Patent Pipe Tongs" in an 1884 Oil Well Supply Co. catalog resembles this design rather than the earlier patent. |
