Towers Engineers Wrench (Union Hardware) - edited
Description:
The patent is for an improved pipe jaw for Donohue's March 1, 1881 combination pipe and nut wrench (pat. no. 238,369). The improvement is in the shape of the recess holding the jaw, and the spring pushing it to grip the work piece. The drawings and specifications also note its application for a stand-alone pipe wrench.

An item in Feb. 10, 1883 MECHANICS implies Donohue was producing the wrench.

This is the third of four patents used for the combination pipe and nut wrench sold by Tower and Lyon - ultimately by Union Hardware. The fourth (no. 280,099) includes features not used in production. Two subsequent pipe wrench patents were granted to Bernard Donahue -- 414,719 and 454,612.

The patent disclaims any features covered by the following patents: W. Evans November 11, 1866 (no. 59,571); J. Goodin Sept. 29, 1868 (no. 82,513); O.B. North Jan. 11, 1876 (no. 172,155), and an 1853 British patent (no. GB-185302755).
