Description:
This is the first appearance of what would become a fixture of clapboard gage design-- a thin metal tongue that slipped under the previous clapboard to hold the tool in place.

This tool actually uses a slightly bent spring for the tongue, so that the force of compressing the spring would be enough to hold the tool in place.
