Taft's Patent Double-Acting Cylinder Wrench (FLICKR)
Description:
Double acting adjusting screw patent. The adjusting nut has two sizes and styles of female threads.

One example corresponding to this design is marked only with the patent date; another includes "T. H. Dodge." Yet another includes "Worcester Tool Co." At least three sizes are known; an 1865 ad lists 7 sizes from 6 inch through 21 inch in "bright" and "black" finish.

This patent was among a group that were either assigned or licensed to Thomas H. Dodge and other investors. In the course of depositions for the "Collins Co. v. Coes" suit and counter-suit, Taft testified about the circumstances surrounding production of this and other of his wrench patents from the late 1850s - early 1860s. He said this one saw production by the Dodge & Wellington partnership for approximately two years.
