Description: |
| The patent is a process patent where the steel which ultimately becomes the cutting edges of axes, adzes, etc. is first poured into a mold, followed by iron or a different steel which forms the eye and head. This two-stage casting eliminates welding. The patent mentions further forging processes to draw out cutting edges. The patent also notes that hammers, anvils, and similar articles with steel faces may be made using the same two-stage casting process.
The Collins Company's August 1871 reissue divided the patent (RE4,537 and RE4,538). |
