Description:
A cam-lever base of the lower jaw latches into notches in the shank. In the pipe wrench version, a lever handle attached to that base tightens the hook jaw.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1895 "Scientific American" listing announcing these wrenches to the trade.
