Description:
A socket to encircle the stud has a slightly angular recess on one side. A gripping cam or multiple cams enter the opposite side of the socket. The patent shows several options for attached handles, or for flat exterior sides to allow the socket to be turned by an open-end wrench.

Corresponding British patent GB-188701396 was registered January 13, 1887.
