Description:
The handle, which incorporates a slanted jaw surface, screws through a block which also serves as the hinge point for the hook jaw. This may be the first wrench patent designed for use in the oil industry.

Swinging hook jaw pipe wrenches of this general appearance are known, but in the absence of visible markings, cannot be taken as proof this patent was put into production. J. L. Taylor's Oct. 23, 1883 patent number 287,193 is quite similar, differing only in the appearance of the jaw face on the main shank.
