M. Powis Bales' influential book, "Woodworking Machinery: Its Rise, Progress, and Construction", says, in a section on veneer-cutting machines, "About the year 1847 very considerable improvements in the method of cutting and laying veneers were introduced in America by Belter, a German cabinetmaker, whereby the variety and beauty of the work was much enhanced."
