Vintage Machinery entry for Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Co.
Description:
Benjamin Garver Lamme was an important electrical engineer for Westinghouse. After Westinghouse's researchers failed to industrialize Tesla's two-phase motor (for a 133 Hertz supply), it was abandoned until Lamme focused his attention on it in late 1891, leading to the development of a practical 60 Hertz version of the Tesla motor. This was the first fully practical induction motor from Westinghouse. Another Westinghouse researcher, N. W. Storer, would modify Lamme's motor to a squirrel-cage design, which would prove to work as well and was simpler to manufacture. The Westinghouse two-phase motor was demonstrated at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
