Description: |
According to a research paper from Old Sturbridge Village, "In 1830 Clark Willson, a Swanzey, New Hampshire, sawmill operator, patented a "Spiral Vent Water Wheel" It consisted of a vertical-shaft tub wheel surrounded by a high wooden curbing. Water filled the tub in a vortex and discharged downward through curved wooden or iron blades. Willson's patented reaction wheel was placed in many sawmills in New Hampshire and Maine after 1830. William Kendall, Jr. (see patent X,4314), installed Willson's wheels in his sawmills at Waterville." |
