The wedge shape of the jaws lead many to the assumption this is an adjustable alligator wrench. The specifications note it could be used as a pipe wrench. Known examples are marked only with the patent date, and nickel plated.

The tool received Canadian patent no. CA-64,503 on Oct. 23, 1899.
