Description:
The gripping surface or girdle is arcs of a circle hinged together, and tightened by cam action of the handle. A single handle came with several sizes of interchangeable grips. The first Parmelee girdle pipe wrench patent is no. 379,123 issued March 6, 1888. A modified version was patented in 1897 (pat. no. 590,853). In this 2nd version of the Parmelee Wrench, the latch is accomplished by rotating the handle to advance a bolt against the end of the girdle.

The Parmelee Wrench Company was a family operation which incorporated in 1905.

The latch mechanism was modified in Roy Parmelee's Nov. 11, 1907 patent (no. 871,436). Large Parmelee girdle wrenches are still in production at the beginning of the 21st Century.
