Description:
The movable jaw has a threaded tongue extending through a slot in the main shank with a nut on the back side of the shank. The shank tapers with the slender end toward the fixed jaw so that pressure on the movable jaw is resisted by the "swell" of the shank.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1868 "Scientific American" ad listing this patent for sale. It is shown in an 1870 WALWORTH catalog as TRIPP's TIGHT GRIP WRENCH.
