Description:
This is the earliest patent I can find for an inclinometer. It uses a hermetically sealed disk half-filled with quicksilver (mercury), with a needle floating on it. The outer rim of the disk is marked with degrees.

My guess is that the inventor here was one of the namesakes of the Homers & Ladd company, since one of the witnesses for patent #7,257, issued on the same date and assigned to Homers & Ladd, also witnessed this patent.
