Description:
One of the most brilliant designs in tool history. It is extremely simple, yet elegant and very functional. It uses a bar that is helical in profile, fitted into a head that slips easily over the bar. The shape of the arm is such that a tiny twist of the head will lock it firmly in position.

This tool was was wildly popular, and with good reason. It was manufactured for many years by the Star Tool Company, and most examples are found marked with the Star logo and patent date. It was produced in a variety of configurations and woods.

Note that there is another patented gage which uses the same locking mechanism, the Caris Patent (673677 - 5/7/1901).
