Description:
The patent is for a curved wedge-shaped supplemental jaw to enable a nut wrench to be used as a pipe wrench. The patent includes a provision for attaching the supplemental jaw piece to the adjustable wrench with a short piece of chain or wire.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" shows an 1868 "Scientific American" announcement for FARIES' PIPE THUMB. It appears on pg. 168 of the September 9, 1868 issue. Cope's listing has Faries at Decatur, Illinois. Cope also shows a hardware trade announcement from 1895 showing the identical tool produced by Charles F. Mann & Co. of St. Johnsbury, VT as the "Vest Pocket Pipe Wrench."
