Description:
A spring loaded jaw with the portion adjacent to the shank cut away functions as a ratchet nut wrench. The patent also shows the same spring feature employed on a hook jaw pipe wrench and on an angle-jaw wrench.

An article on pg. 321 of the November 18, 1868 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN touts the invention's advantages, and solicits proposals for manufacture.
