Description:
Ratchet wrench with a pawl in the ratchet head engaging rack teeth in the surrounding frame. The design enables slight motion of the handle to gain a new "purchase." The head is retained in the frame by thin plates fastened to the frame. The patent describes interchangeable heads to adapt to various sizes and shapes. This feature was replaced by interchangeable sockets in the tools as produced. One series of fixed size ratchets was also produced.

Used in the BAY STATE TOOL CO. ratchet, and later in the TUDOR MFG. CO. BAY STATE RATCHET. BAY STATE PUMP CO. AUTOKIT ratchets were also produced using this ratchet structure. The earliest BAY STATE ratchets used the structure in patent no. 666,202; without careful analysis it may not be possible to discern which ratchet mechanism is employed in the later models.
