Description:
The "U" shaped nut guards protect against accidental alteration of the adjustment if the wrench rubs against a surface in use. The frame has a modified opening to accommodate them. The feature appears on TRIMO pipe and nut wrenches.

The patent is stamped on the wear surface of the metal "U" -- PAT'D 12-19-11

Patent no. 1,430,955 is a later refinement of the nut guard, and shows a frame style that was in use for TRIMO nut wrenches as early as 1912.
