Description: |
The specifications describe a quick-adjust sliding jaw axle nut wrench which uses a quarter turn of the handle and screw to hold the adjustment. The wrench as produced has jaws as shown in the drawings but the adjusting screw is continuous.
The movable jaw may be constructed according to the method and design in patent no. 376,891.
Notices in the August 25, 1887 "Scientific American" and other fall 1887 trade journals described a double jaw "axle nut / nut wrench" version, the single jaw version was announced in the October 31, 1886 "Iron Age." Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" also notes the AMERICAN WRENCH CO. of Augusta, ME as manufacturer of this wrench along with Lancaster's 1882 axle nut wrench (patent no. 267,228). |
