Description:
The internally threaded adjusting nut engages thread cut on the shank of the wrench. The adjusting nut attaches to the moveable jaw with a strap. This is the first U.S. Screw adjust wrench patent. Reissued 17 May 1842; Extended 7 years from 17 August 1849 ; Renewed 2nd time 25 November 1851.

An 1836 JOURNAL OF THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE summary of this patent notes "manufactured by N. FOOT of Springfield, Massachusetts." (Probably HOMER FOOT & Co.)

Wrenches based on this patent and subsequent modifications were produced into the mid-20th Century.

Loring Coes' April 16, 1841 patent no. 2,054 includes reference to Merrick's wrench by way of contrast.
