Description:

This caliper design uses an unusual locking hub,and pivoting indicator arms attached to the ends of the arms. The patent drawings show these two features used on all different types of calipers.

Israel Kinney also holds an Ornamental Lathe patent (#182,762 - 10/3/1876), and there is also a Cyrus Kinney in the same town that holds several tool patents(including the famous Kinney slitting gage #229,258 - 6/29/1880). My guess is the two are related.
