The premise on this piece is that it is crucial to mark the
centerline of a mortise, such that you can use a full-width drill
to clear the waste, rather than using a smaller size bit and
chiselling to the line. To accomplish this, the gage uses a
center post with left-hand threads on one side of the center
cutter and right-hand threads on the other. This is basically the
same idea embodied in Kenny's Patent of 1870 (98,504).
Another unusual feature of this gage is that it uses three
different shapes of cutting wheels, such that it can be used to
mark one, two, or three lines depending on the orientation of the
cutters.
