Jeff Joslin Vintage Machinery entry for Nathan West Vintage Machinery entry for John McClintic

Description: |
| This patent, which was restored after the 1836 fire at the Patent Office, is a noteworthy early woodworking machine. Patentee McClintic was a Windsor chair-maker who was active 1807 to at least 1827. This patent was licensed to Nathan West of Washington for manufacture, and also to the US Navy, who paid McClintic $700 for the rights. It is not known who actually supplied the Navy with mortising machines, or perhaps the Navy built their own machines. For more on this patent, see the description of patent 5,944X, granted to Abner Foster for a mortiser that proved to be highly derivative of the McClintic mortiser. |
